How I did it: I practiced playing for about half an hour everyday. I played little songs I made up and got my fingers a little callused, and soon I could keep my fingers down (pressing hard enough on the strings was the biggest problem for me, my fingertips were so soft) and I was playing progressively better each day. One of the most important things I learned about shelter in the wilderness is that it has to be small enough to contain your body heat, but large enough for you to be comfortable in it. It needs to be in a secluded spot where you can get out without being seen.
