Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

Job Done!

Last year I spent 3 days at the Reading festival, and all i can say is “oh my god!”. Think about what are the worst conditions you would be willing to live in and that is what festival camping is all about! Maybe im too old but it takes a bit of recovering too.
Just want to do Glastonbury and the Burning Man festival and thats my lot!

Slight delay......

Well this goal has always been in the background and never coming to fruitition for one reason or another. But this summer, myself, my boy and my missus are doing all 3 peaks over a week – bit of a camping holiday. Although I know this isnt the actual 3 peaks CHALLENGE but it will be good as a way to determine the best way to climb it and travel routes etc.

February Challenge

This month I am going to break an official Guinness World Record! My chosen subject is the merciless destruction of eggs! I have contacted Guinness who have approved my attempt, however it takes up to 4 weeks for them to process the whole thing. So , hopefully I should get all my details and make my record attempt before the month is over. Unfortunately I will not be officially recognised as a Record Holder until 4-8 weeks later. I feel it should still count though as it will still be in February when I make my attempt.

January 2010

Well this month I learnt how to snowboard. It took me roughly 4 weeks of 1 hour sessions but now I am classed as a competent boarder and can go it alone.

Well this month I am aiming to become the world’s best person at…..breaking eggs with my head in 30 seconds! I’ve emailed Guinness and they have accepted my record attempt. I have found myself an egg supplier so all I am waiting for is for Guinness to get back to me with all the rules and regs. Watch this space!

Gold medal - thank you very much!!

As part of my ongoing judo training I was entered into a competition in November. I wasn’t expecting to do very well and before I knew it I was in the final. Two minutes later and I have my first gold medal!

Snow, snow here we go!

Well, not sure what got me to do it but I’ve started it. Travelled 60 miles to Xscape to take some lessons on their snow slope. Give it another 2/3 months and I will be classed as a competent snowboarder!

So many things and so little time.

Well, unfortunately my plan has been on the back burner for the last six months with one thing or another. However, I have been working on other goals in those six months so its not all gone to waste. I got a Santa Run 2009 application through the post last week which got me thinking again. I am currently training 5-6 days a week and my fitness is a lot better nowadays then what it use to be. I can now quite easily go for a 2-3 mile run without dropping down dead. So, I now wondering about doing this run so I can compare it to how i did last year. This might kick start the whole marathon thing again. There just isn’t enough hours in the day to be doing all this stuff!

Tenerife 2009

Well, I did it! My other half gave me an ultimatum and I rose to the challenge. In the space of 3 days we booked a holiday, got on a plane and went to Tenerife. She reckoned that the amount of turbulence we had was the worst she has experienced and she’s been flying 10+ years. I likened it to riding on a very bumpy train and wasn’t too bothered by it. So all this time my fear has been nothing more than me panicing about nothing. Now I have overcome the flying thing I can now start notching up a few more of my goals.

Wait for 1, then 3 come along at once!

Well this has come out of nowhere. First – one of my mates wanted someone to partner with him at Muay Thai so I volunteered and now 5 months later I’m still going strong. THEN he wanted a ground based martial art and we happened across two former national champions ( one british and one polish) who had just opened a judo club with the aim of being the best club in the country within 5 years. I am currently an orange belt and have my first competition in November. And thirdly, because we now have a stand up and a ground based martial art, both me and my mate are having a go at MMA next year. We’re also looking into BJJ at the mo.

Making progress.....

Had my 2nd running event last month. The lincoln 10k run. did a couple of weeks training and my best time was 1hr 12 min. wanted to break the hour but it looked doubtful. then the day of the run i prepared and ate properly and absolutley loved it. Finished it in 57 minutes 47 seconds. Result! Am now taking part in my 2nd 10k run in June and hopefully going to try and take part in the Great North Run (half marathon) up in Newcastle in September.

I’m becoming obsessed with wanting to take part in little world type adventures. In July I’m hoping to take part in the Three Peaks Challenge – climbing the UKs three highest mountains in 24hrs. Its sounds a bit demanding but it doesn’t involve any advanced rock climbing like you’d expect on Everest but simply some demanding walking (I think the regulars call it hiking!). I’ve found that the same is with Mt Kilimanjaro. Yes its the worlds highest free standing mountain but it can all be accomplished without any serious training and all for a couple of thousand pounds – as oppose to Everest which involves lots of training and many tens of thousands of pounds.

Run Santa, Run!!!

Well I’ve decided to give this marathon plan a go. I’m going to do some runs over the next 12 months slowly building up to the big one. Did my first run in December of 08 – a Santa run round my town. It was only 3.5km but it taught me some valuable stuff. My next run will be my biggest yet – the lincoln 10k run – which is in March of 09. If all goes well I will then do The Great North Run up in Newcastle which is about 15 miles. Then the following year its the big one – The London Marathon.

learn how to cook a fillet steak

Well I threw caution to the wind the other day and had a go at shallow frying a steak or two. Went for sirloin as oppose to the more expensive fillet. Didnt realise how much it spat fat at you in the pan – i gave the whole kitchen a thin shine of fat oil after I’d finished! Either I’m missing some small fine details or i
I’m a worse cook than I thought. I think my next step is to upgrade mt tools of the trade and get a better pan for the job.

tick tock tick tock..............

well my passport came today so there is nothing stopping me from going now except for my irrational fear of flying which i have developed. conquer your fears they say. easier said than done i say.

write a screenplay

a few years ago i had an idea for a film and i made loads of little notes ranging from the characters to little set pieces including dialogue. never thought about it again until recently i found some of my notes and it has rekindled my interest in it all. Its in the same mould as the brit flicks/guy richie stuff but with less gangsters. well less than the usual amount. Wont go into too much detail – dont want my masterplan taking away from me!

see lightning strike

always been mesmerised by the lightning storms you see in other parts of the world and would love to watch some. With climate change happening i think this goal might come sooner rather than later. Last week lincoln had such a storm that had very visible forked lightning for the best part of 30 minutes. Unfortunately i missed all of it because i was indoors. it was only when the neighbours and my partner started going on about it that i realised a potential goal had come and gone.

Its slowly coming together

I have found a friend who also knows friends – all who are very fit people. so, i have my team sort of. Our relevent partners are pretty capable of doing the driving so its just a case of getting a bit of orienteering under my belt and increase my fitness levels and it could be on. Next spring/summer is when it all happens so that gives me a good few months to get into shape.
