I wasn’t sure for a long time what, exactly I wanted to earn my master’s degree in, although I knew I definitely wanted to continue in school. When I was teaching High School in NYC, I was going for a Master’s in Education. Before that, I finished college and headed out to Montana for the MFA in Creative Writing program there. (Didn’t work out too well - long story.) Here in Baltimore, I discovered that the University of Baltimore offered a Master’s program in Publications Design, a combination of writing and graphic design. It seemed perfect: my undergrad degree was in Creative Writing and I was working as a graphic designer. I went for a year, then money got tight and I postponed and postponed… Finally, this spring, I kicked myself in the butt and started going again. In the 5 years I was away, they’d instituted an MFA program and - full circle—that’s where I am. I think I’ll probably be done in Spring 2007.

That novel I have in me
Everyone’s got one novel in them—of this I am certain. Mine’s been clawing its way out of me for the past (my God! has it been?) 20 years, ever since I ran away from grad school at University of Montana. A recurring dream, it takes over my mind at odd intervals, always showing different threads of the story. The problem is pulling those threads together into something more elegant than a knot.
