Made the trek cross country, staying with husband and 2 cats in cousin’s apartment looking for our own apartment. It’s slow going, but totally worth it. We feel incredibly lucky that we are able to take our time finding an apartment and are not starving as we do so. But our connections with Los Angeles are cut (no apartment there!) and while we feel a bit like tourists here, we know that once we take our pictures in Times Square, we will still be here afterwards.

How I did it: Wrote ahead to as many people as I knew who already moved to NY (college friends, colleagues, business connections) to let them know that I needed contact info for apartment searches, jobs, or just the desire to have coffee and reconnect. Took time to analyze my current apartment and sold/donated/dumped as much stuff as necessary to slim down the bulk of packing. Divided stuff into "survival" gear (clothes, business material, … Read how I did it…
I had saved about $3000 and then my father gave me a check to make my move to NY quicker and less painful financially. He’s so supportive, and I feel a little spoiled.
But the experience of setting aside money was invaluable. Priorities were made, clothes and shoes were left unbought, more cooking done at home and repairs instead of replacements took hold. I can continue this trend into the future and will set a new goal for myself savings-wise so that I always have the discipline to save rather than spend unwisely.
Well, I did a caroling gig all December, so I did perform holiday work for 2007. However, didn’t have the time/energy to put together an actual show, so maybe I should change it to a 2008 holiday show.
