The “century club” is neat group to identify with. They aren’t all Lance wannabes or total in-your-face competitiors. There is a community feeling of people working hard and having fun.
I like it very much.

I rode the Seagull Century in the middle of a genuine Nor’Easter. 20 mph headwinds all the way towards the beach. Rain, very low temps compared to what I’d been training in all summer.
At one point I dismounted and walked the rest of the length of windswept cornfield becuase I felt as if I was moving backwards faster than I was moving forwards. I told my husband that I am completely cured of the craziness that is century riding.
During the ride, many dropped wrappers that I was having fun taking mental notes on: “Oh, so somebody swtiched from cliff bars to gels by mile twenty.” Or, “Hmm, more raspberry power gel than other flavors.” But I couldn’t fight the giggles when I saw a discarded bag of Alpo hi-pro! I hope that wasn’t discarded by a cyclist!
Thanks to all the friends and family who supported this goal. Your cheering section really did keep me going.
Well, I’ve been training and prepping and reading and talking with other cyclists and even a coach. Saturday will be time to walk the walk and complete the Seagull century!
Wish me luck, everyone!
(Yeah, I’m also wishing that I hadn’t told so many people ;-)
