I have wanted to dread my hair for years and always told myself that I would as soon as I went back to school full-time. Well I’m back in school but only part time, but I’m at an age were if I don’t do it now I never will. I’ll just be to old and it would look silly. I’ve always been concerned about employment and how men would react. Now I see it as a feminist statement, kind of like “Hey I’ve got better things to worry about then blow-drying, curling and styling my hair every morning!” I think I’m finally ready but I might need a little help/encouragement.

I have very thick pretty straight hair and want to dread my hair, but I am concerned about a few things. If any one can give me advice on the following topics let me know.
1. I don’t want natty dreads, that is I don’t want big clumpy uneven dreadlocks I want then to be even and kind of small, think more raver style than hippie, should I go to a salon to get them started or just pull them apart as they grow?
2. To beeswax or not to beeswax?
3. I had one section of hair in a dreadlock and because my hair is so straight it grew out that way and not tangled how do you maintain?
4. I’ve talked to girls before who said they started getting headaches from their dreadlocks getting heavy, my hair is thick should I be worried?
