Doesn’t hurt at all! If you’re getting your first one, start with something small.
You get one cat because they’re so cute, but then you need to get another one so the first won’t be lonely. Once they’re grown you get a kitten because they’re full of energy, then you need another kitten to keep the other company. From there it’s just a downhill slide into cat lady-dom….I must avoid it!
It’s worth doing if you’re willing to go for meals or to attractions by yourself. If you’re just going to sit in a hotel room and watch TV it’s not worth it!
