Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Update

This summer I managed to pay off one of my credits, and my total debt is now 3000 sKr less!

celebrate turning 30 (read all 2 entries…)

I had a lovely 30th birthday with my family! Nice food, a good movie and reading a bedtime story to my nephew made the day perfect.

stop drinking (read all 2 entries…)
3 months

It’s been 3 months now since I last had a drink, and I’m one of the lucky few who’s done well. There are times when I really want a drink, or to go out and get drunk with my friends, but I still remember how awful it felt the last time I was drunk and how horrible I felt the day after. I recently also got reminded about that same time, and even if I didn’t do anything too stupid it still felt ashamed being reminded of it.

I avoid situations where people are drinking, to not get talked into having just one drink. I’ve told a friend, who said he didn’t believe me and asked me if I wanted a glass of wine recently, but when I said no he respected that. My sister is pregnant so I have a good reason to not drink when I’m with my family. I got rid of the last alcohol I had at home. I bought myself a present for doing so well. I’m guessing the next 3 months will be easy too, and then the real challenge will begin.

Time

This was more difficult than I thought. I’ve gone through most of the things I own by now, put everything in piles: Things to use up, Things to throw away, Things to give away or sell. Getting rid of everything is going to take time, I don’t want to throw away things that are fully functioning, and since I have little money I want to sell as much as possible. So I extended my initial deadline with two months, to give myself more time to get rid of everything.

Some progress

I’ve been making some progress in the past weeks: a few more parts of my apartment are now decluttered, but I’m not finished yet. Will have to work hard in the coming two weeks!

get a job (read all 4 entries…)
Going slowly

It’s been a few frustrating weeks and then it started going better. I had phone contact with a potential employer, who sounded very positive, but then they decided to interview other people. Next week I have a short interview, like a pre-interview, with another company, but I don’t have any high expectations since they probably will be interviewing hundreds of people that day. I really hope I get a job soon, very soon.

Bathroom cleared!

I’ve cleaned out my bathroom from all clutter now! Threw away some old make up. Still have some random skin care samples and things like that, but I plan to use them as soon as possible. One place down, four to go for a clutter free apartment!

write more letters
Untitled

I have always loved writing letters, and had a huge box of letters I’ve recieved that recently got stolen. It feels awful, I pretty much lost every letter that was sent to me during the past ten years. I’m heart broken, they had a lot of emotional value for me. The only good thing is that I now have a reason to start write more letters, so I can start building a new collection.

publish an article
Untitled

When I was younger (a teenager!) I occasionally wrote some articles fro the local newspaper so technically I’ve already done this goal. Earlier this year I had a letter to the editor published in a (free) magazine and it made me want to write something again. Not sure what and not sure where to get it published, but I’m sure it can be done.

clean out the clutter (read all 4 entries…)
Untitled

I’ve been trying to do this pretty much forever but my apartment still seems cluttered. It’s stressful and frustrating, and I need to work harder. Since I have a lot of time on my hands I’m going to work hard on this the next month or so. Wish me luck!

get business cards
Waiting!

Found a discount code and just ordered a set of 50 cards! It’ll be my first personal business cards and I pretty much only want them because I like the idea of having my own business cards. The ones I had at my old job were very loved by me and I gave them away to anyone I met.

I wasn’t sure what information to write on the cards so I have my name, email address and phone number. On the front is a photo I took (and a logo thanks to the discount code) and that I really like. I should get them within a month, and I look forward to reciving them.

November update

I did week 3 and 4, and my knees hated it. Apperantly they can’t deal with me running three times a week, which sucks because I love running now! I’ve rested for three weeks and now I’m planning to try and run once or twice every week, and see if that feels better.

blog regularly (read all 2 entries…)
November

In the spirit of NaBloPoMo I’m trying to blog daily. It gives me an opportunity to find what I feel best writing, what kind of posts I want to make, and it makes me log into blogspot daily, which feels like a step in the right direction to blog regularly.

I just got a roll of film developed (cross processed!) and it reminded me why I wanted to make this goal. Seeing the crazy colored pictures from my recent short travels made me happy!

own a vintage gown
Why?

I would absolutely LOVE owning a vintage gown, or party dress or something similar. A few years ago I bought a 1960s velvet cocktail dress and it would be nice to extend my collection with something older. Hopefully I will one day own something fancy from the 1900-1920s that I never will have an opportunity to wear.

I did some math yesterday, and if I get a job soon and live on a strict budget I can pay off all my credit cards and things like that within a year! My students loan will take more time but I didn’t expect anything else.

Counting down

It’s only 50 weeks left now! 349 days of planning. Hopefully I’ll have a job by then so I can afford to travel somewhere.

get a job (read all 4 entries…)
I got a job!

Wohoo! Not a proper job, I’ll be a substitute teacher in another town, and I’ll only be working one day every week or so. But it is a huge step in the right direction and very motivating! My goal is still to get a full-time job.

stop drinking (read all 2 entries…)
Untitled

I need to do this. Not because I drink often or daily, but because when I drink, I drink until I barely can stand up. I can’t have just one drink, or one glass of wine. I hate it, and I hate drunk me.

Week 3 - take 2

I rested my knees for 4 weeks and they have started to feel better. Not perfect, but good enough for me to try to run again. I repeated week 3, day 1 (from my couch-to-5k running plan) and it went fine! It felt great! My knees didn’t bother me at all! So I’ll repeat the rest of week 3 and hope it will go better this time.
