I should pay more attention to my meeting wizard alerts. I love them. But I need to pay more attention to them.

Wednesday, April 24, 2013: Don't backup

1) Don’t back up before a busy day
When you are really busy at work, do not copy a ton of files to your external hard drive the night before. You think you are being efficient by organizing your files the night before a busy day, but that will actually slow you down.

On a Macintosh, when you move a bunch of files around, the computer needs to update its internal index of all the contents and locations of the files. The Mac does this in the background continually while you work.

This continual background updating will slow your computer down while you are trying to work.

2) Adobe Illustrator automatically embeds fonts
When you place an Illustrator file into Indesign, apparently you don’t need the fonts? It’s weird. I have an Illustrator file with fonts. When I open the Illustrator file, I need the fonts. But when I place that same illustrator file in Indesign, and then do a “package files” it doesn’t collect the fonts, because they are already embedded in the Illustrator file.

3)Act-On looks to be a good email marketing platform
I rarely ever answer my phone when I don’t recognize the number. But yesterday I was feeling daring, so I picked it up only to have someone trying to sell me something. I listened to his pitch for the first minute and then when he walked me through the demo, I was really impressed. I’m hoping that we can use Act-On at work to replace Eloqua and VerticalResponse.

Tuesday April 23: RFQ tips

1) Hosting
When putting together an RFQ (Request for Quote) to move a site from one CMS onto Drupal, it’s a good idea to mention where you’d like the site hosted. If you are self-hosting, include the server specs, so the web development agency knows if your hosting service can handle it.

2) Content Migration
A continuation of the first point, it’s also a good idea to ask for the content migration to be a line-item on the quote.

3) Adobe Application Manager
I knew this already, but as i’m setting up the computer for our summer intern, I’m reminded of how great the Adobe Application Manager is. It makes installing and upgrading all the Adobe apps so easy!

4) Lots of white papers from Content Marketing Institute.
I downloaded seven white papers read!
http://contentmarketinginstitute.com/education/white-paper-library/

5) Setting up a new computer for the summer intern takes some time

  • Install Adobe apps
  • Install Font Explorer Pro
  • Install Text Wrangle
  • Install Transmit
  • Install Microsoft Office (tech did this for me)
  • Setup email in Outlook
  • Set up folders (like Marketing jobs folder)
  • Set up server aliases
  • Set up FTP log-ins in FTP program
  • Set up Dreamweaver (FTP log-ins and site folders)
  • Install fonts
  • Set up font library to be consistent with my font library
