Saito’s is my favorite sushi spot on the 2nd St strip. Not as trendy as Wasabi Bistro, not as crowded as Shiro’s, I like its atmosphere the best, not to mention that the owner/chef is my namesake, or I’m his. Walking distance to my apartment doesn’t hurt either. It’s nearly always in a moderately crowded state, with at least one open table on either side of you, quite a pleasant change from a prior life in NYC. There is an asian eggplant appetizer that’s worth a try for the exquisite sauce, let alone the succulent eggplant. Also, the black cod and fried yellowtail cheeks are great cooked entrees.

How I did it: I hired a tutor. That was the best thing I ever did in the ten years I've been studying. Don't bother with large classes, or even small groups. Nothing can replace the immediacy of a tutor. The other thing is I got a bit maniacal about studying. I simply have a strong prediliction for learning languages. This is not to be confused with having a talent. I have as bad a memory as the next person. But… Read how I did it…
I’ve visited China numerous times, but have never lived there longer than 4 months. But each time I went I had a great time and felt a certain liberation I don’t feel in the States. Anyway, I’ve hired a mandarin tutor who is excellent. It’s the language that fascinates me, as well as the culture. The country is both wonderful and a basket-case.
