Bike to work
Just bought a bike... 2 months ago

I just bought a bike on Wednesday afternoon. It’s a “comfort” bike just right for an old chubby guy who lives about a mile from work. I rode both yesterday and today to work and plan on keeping it up, eventually adding even a bit more riding.

I used to ride a lot, doing centuries and the like, but then went through some difficulties, including several knee operations. That pretty much put an end to it.

I realized recently that I could ride a bike if I took it easy and didn’t think I had to do the 25+ miles a day thing again, so here I am!

I’ve been riding a moped back and forth to work which is a lot less expensive than a car, so saving $$$ isn’t really an issue. It’s health. I think I’ll feel better if I move a bit more. I’ve been a lump lately and I can feel it.

Now I just have to get a rack for the back to carry stuff – today’s after work chore. I think I’ll ride. :-)

learn to play the ukulele
I live in Hawaii...why not? 4 months ago

I played the ukulele, according to my Mom, when I was in grade school and she’s got the instrument to prove it. That was some 40 years ago or more I’m afraid and I’ve completely forgotten it. So…

I’m thinking of adding the ukulele to the mandolin as my axes of choice. My thought is it might be a bit quieter when I want to play late at night.

Besides, I live in Hawaii!

A Year Down the Road 4 months ago

I’m still plinking away at the mandolin. I’ve picked it up almost daily for a year and tried to play for a minimum of 10 minutes – if for no other reason that to keep my fingers working.

It’s great. My mandolin sounds a lot better than it did a year ago and I’m not talking about my playing (though that’s improved too). The instrument had opened up a lot through use and seems to have louder, but sweeter tone.

Good stuff.
