We just got back last night from our Route 66 trip. Our caravan of VW New Beetles (at times between 7 and 18 cars) started in Chicago and drove to California, stopping in Roswell, NM, along the way to attend the world’s largest New Beetle-only car show and gathering.
Some of the highlights:
The blue whale in Catoosa, OK. Hard to explain why it’s so cool, but don’t miss it!
The Blue Swallow motel in Tucumcari, NM. A quaint 50s-style motel with some built-in garages, clean rooms, and friendly staff—the rooms felt like a guest room in someone’s home.
The Grand Canyon—amazing.
Surviving the trip over Sitgreaves Pass and going on to Oatman, AZ. Some drivers on our caravan found the steep mountain road with treacherous curves and scary drop-offs exciting, but I was terrified the entire time. Oatman, on the way down the mountain, is a cute little Old West town with burros that roam the streets.
I highly recommend driving the mother road. We didn’t have enough time to see everything we wanted to, but we’re planning other trips that go near it, so we hope to catch more sights in the future.
