I was born in Chicago. I grew up in Wisconsin. I finally moved to Chicago as an adult and spent several years there working in various tech support positions, then tried to make a go as a freelancer after the crash seemed to dry up my consulting jobs. I’ve been stuck in Wisconsin for a while, back “home”, but I really feel like Chicago is the home where I was meant to be, and the things that I didn’t do enough of while I was there just itch under my skin.

I’m doing quite well with this goal. I was never very good at discovering new music for myself in the past; I tended to be conservative about what I decided to like and reluctant to go beyond a few well-trod paths. Oh, I wasn’t some mindless Top 40 slave; I carefully chose things in a certain range of critical acceptance. I ended up with a passel of people I liked that served me well enough but failed to challenge or excite me, and kept me out of the social aspects of music, such as going to concerts and shows and talking about new music.
I’ll come back to this and detail some of the steps I’ve been taking, but in essence I’ve been playing with music recommendation services and internet radio, and ripping all my music into iTunes so I can listen to it at will, which has given me more freedom and more interest in music than I have ever had. And I’m 41!
My old blog was just outside the A-list. Hey, I began it in 1999, when there were somewhere between 50 and 100 sites calling themselves weblogs.
This time out, my blog is my business card. I need to build mindshare and goodwill before I get going; I may need help and advice, and the best way to get that is to have it freely given. Blogging may be a completely different animal today, but there’s still a limited number of people working in the business and it’s clearly the communication and community tool of choice.
