How I did it: I cried a lot. I went through everything that had happened between us and for the first time I was completely honest with myself. I acknowledged the things I did that contributed to his actions and his behaviour towards me and once I allowed myself to see the whole picture and not just my side of the story I saw that I had done wrong too. I pretty speak rapid-fire Igbo every day now. Talking to my grandmother helps a lot because I can speak Igbo with her, but I’m still having a lot of problems expressing more modern scenarios in Igbo. There’s a dearth of suitable vocabulary to express my experiences, and it’s frustrating. I’m thinking of setting up a commission to formulate new Igbo words. Our language is stagnating since we don’t make any new words. We can’t have this. I would like to speak Igbo without a single English word included. Apart from that little problem, my progress is quite pleasing.
Wow, I said I was going to start tomorrow… two months ago. I have only managed to go once. I do feel very ashamed of myself.
