Well, I finally did this, after like 7 years. lol
For my capstone project I submitted a portfolio of 3 short stories and 6 or so poems.
Part of the reason I chose to do a creative writing project was that I really felt like it would be my last chance to force myself to do such a project in an academic setting. I knew I wasn’t going to have a chance for creative writing in my graduate program so I thought I’d do it and the end of my bachelor’s. Also, I was hoping to reawaken the writer in myself.
Now, where most people would have 4 months to finish this project, I had 8 weeks since I took it over the summer. By week 6, I had like 4 pages of a story and a few crappy poems. lol. So things got a little stressful. I remember talking to my bff and telling her “I started this project hoping that I would reawaken the writer in myself, but all it’s going to do is make me hate it even more.” lol
But after a few late night visits from my neighbor who served as an odd point of inspiration for me, a few nights of not going to bed until 7 in the morning, and much purging of my soul, I was able to produce 3 short stories which I actually am pretty proud of. After finishing one story in particular I said to myself “I should have written this years ago.” because it gave me so much peace in a few situations in my life.
So, if I ever get the time in between the ridiculous demands of grad school, I will be writing more. I’ve even managed to get a few snippets of stories and opening lines down even with all of this work. So, yeah, DEFINITELY worth doing.

How I did it: I pooled all my savings, paychecks, student loans, scholarships, and tax returns, paid my bills for 5 months, budgeted leftover money for weekly allowances and put in my two weeks notice. I also agonized over the decision for months and even as I was leaving my job I felt like I was having a panic attack. Read how I did it…
How I did it: My best friend and I decided we needed to take a vacation. We bought a flight and hotel package on priceline.com for super cheap for the time during fall break at our university. It was awesome. We walked all over that city. We ate great food, had yummy drinks, shopped and browsed to our hearts' content and had a prolonged discussion with the underage barback at our hotel. How I did it: I forced myself. I can't keep sleeping all the time whenever I have to always be at work or school. It was never really a conscious effort whenever it finally happened. It just did. Read how I did it…

So, even though we’ve had a few drinks together, we hadn’t really gotten drunk until my last week in Tahlequah. It was so much fun. I already knew he was cool, but nothing proves it better than when he can hang out all night at a friend’s party, play beer pong, and listen to my friend Neely ramble on and on. We came home and he puked in my bathtub, which was gross, but incredibly funny.
I also recently drank with both my brother and my mom. Ahhh, family bonding at its finest. lol
Really though, dad was an alcoholic who couldn’t handle his shit, so it’s really fun to be able to prove to him (and us) that it’s possible to drink in moderation and not get mean, crazy, or hurtful but to have a lot of fun and a bonding experience.
Yay for moderation and family love!
I made my postcard, but realized I needed to back it with card stock so it will survive the trip. I love it. It’s something I’ve never said aloud to anyone else, it pays tribute to a loved one, and was very cathartic for me.
