Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

run a 10K
Identified my race!

I’m working on a 5k training program now, but I’ve figured out which 10 k I want to try:

learn about herbs and natural medicine (read all 3 entries…)
Native plants

I have been doing my best to learn to identify native plants while I am out and about hiking. A field guide has really helped. There is a book on medicinal plants of California that I have my eye on. They have a copy at my volunteer job so I might borrow and see what can be seen.

Lose 10 pounds (read all 4 entries…)
New start

I am just trying to generally be healthier. Time will tell if this leads to any weight loss. I am drinking more water and eating a lot of protein at breakfast. I read recently that women who yo-yo the same 10 pounds during their 20s and 30s are going to have more boob sag. There is no hope for most of us, then.

Learn Spanish (read all 2 entries…)
Duolingo is amazing

Duolingo is an amazing service! I have to get over the feeling that I am back in 6th grade with how much my Spanish has deteriorated but it’s simple and easy to get done every day. I will be going to Mexico in two months and hopefully be able to conduct more substantive conversations.

start climbing
Went for my first bouldering session

Had a decent time, the other beginner in my class was a nice older lady. I’m wondering if I should lose some weight before doing this too seriously, it would be less to drag up the wall! I have two more passes left so we’ll see if I can get to it before the end of the year.

some progress

i started a new HIIT (high intensity interval training) program which really feels like it will be something i can stick with. It’s 12 minutes a day, which is 100% doable and doesn’t leave me too sore or tired to do additional activities I enjoy when I have the time (like rock climbing or dance or hiking).

So far, I’ve lost 2 lbs in a week and a 1/2 or so, but some of that is definitely period bloat, so I don’t want to be too optimistic.

Goal is to get this done by the end of the year.

Take a baking class/make some lovely macarons
Found some schools!

Turns out there are tons of places to get your baking on here in the Bay Area. I found some courses and will be signing up as soon as I get paid next month:

start putting money in the IRA

Signed up for online management, but need to get dad to hand over the reins

get out of debt (read all 2 entries…)

Paid off one credit card! One left to go!

give more to charity
Just was lazy!

I get so many charity emails but kept ignoring them. I just gave $20.00 to a grad school classmate’s charity for Afghan scholars and set up a sustaining $10/month to the local children’s hospital which was in danger of closing a while back. It’s not a lot, but now that it’s being taken out automatically, I know that I can do something even when I’m distracted and busy.

Learn to play the ukelele

Just ordered a beginners kit off Amazon. Lets see how it goes!

start a 'young women in energy' event
getting off the ground!

I might actually do this! I talked it up to a few people and then felt like I kind of had to follow through. Pitched it to one of the YPE board members now we are having coffee next week! I am quite happy with myself but let’s see how it goes.

run a half marathon (read all 2 entries…)
half marathon #2

I’ve just started training for the San Francisco 1/2 marathon but I really want to run the Disney Princess 1/2 marathon next February! :D

run a half marathon (read all 2 entries…)

I’ve started training for the San Francisco half marathon in July!

climb/hike Mt. Whitney
entered the lottery!

I submitted an application for the permit lottery for this summer! So if the permit comes through, it will be time to start training in earnest! :D

Learn Japanese (read all 6 entries…)
Got a tutor

Stopped trying to force myself to get over my embarrassment and just hired a tutor to help improve my confidence speaking. It’s going well!

passed the written language exam!

Yay, only need to pass the oral exam now.

pass language test

only the written exam, but that’s something!

get a job
yay interviews

have some interviews for great positions coming up in the next few weeks. My goal was to have a job before I turn 26, but if it’s a few weeks late, that counts, right? one thing that is really helping me is ‘what color is your parachute’. I just completed the ‘flower’ exercise and I feel a lot more confident going into my interviews and discussing my skills and knowledge.
