Unless you have time to hike or raft the canyon don’t go. It is just an hour drive around the rim and you spend hours getting there.
There are better places where you can take in amzing beauty and hike great day hikes.
Zion, Bryce and Arches are all within driving distance of the canyon and you can get out and make a day of hiking.
Instead of staying in an over priced hotel, get some freinds together and rent a house for a weekend in Sedona or down the road in Oak Creek.
We rent a condo every time we go and stay for 3/4 of what we would in a hotel and have more room and amenities.
Sedona can be a bit comercial for some people. We largely avoid the town and hike the outer hikes. Often times we see only one or two other people on the outer hikes.
Cathedral Rock is worth hiking even though it is pretty populated. The sycamore leaves there are amazing in color in mid november and as big as your head! Also the skies are super clear there, go out arounf November 18-19 and watch the Leonid Meteors!
Safety Tips:
Be careful if you hike up on top of a mesa and mark the point you need to come down. If we hadn’t brought our GPS we would have been in a bit of trouble. Make sure you bring plenty of water on your hike. Geta good Hydration pack. My wife sprained her ancle on a hike and we had to use a dead yucca as a cane to get her down.
