How I did it: Just began from generating very basic sentences. Then I consulted Japanese-English and English-Japanese dictionaries, and googled for the right word or usage.I have been blogging in Japanese (my native language) about 1170 days on almost daily basis, and that experience helped me much. How I did it: I have only read a Japanese translation (by Kyuichiro Inoue), so I cannot suggest which (English) version you should choose.Eventually I enjoyed reading this novel, but I have to confess that the very first part (Combray) was the hardest to bear, especially before the appearance of a piece of very famous madeleine.
