There are so many books that I want to read and, at the pace I’m going at now, I’ll never be able to read them all. I’m also worried about keeping up with schoolwork. It’s easy to fall behind since I don’t read very quickly, and… that’s frustrating. This seems important.

How I did it: I started going to a swing dancing venue regularly. The Tapestry in Minneapolis is a great place to learn and practice. I joined the swing club at my school and learned a lot from that. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I bought a drum online, waited for it to come, and then joined up with a drum circle in Minneapolis. I still haven't played with them yet, but it looks really fun! They had a few sessions this summer, but I don't know if they will again for a while. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I bought my duduk off eBay from a dealer a friend recommended to me. The dealer gave me a pdf file with instructions on how to play, so I was able to teach myself. I had been playing french horn for a long time which really helped with the breath support issue. I got used to the reeds after about a week.I still have a long way to go before I sound like Djivan Gasparyan, but I feel like I could play some basic folk songs. Read how I did it…

21. Playing make-believe with my niece
22. Thinking about possibilities for the future
23. Making connections from what I’m learning in classes to other classes or life
24. Reading out loud to someone who loves my voice
25. Driving a nail perfectly. When the whole movement feels divine.
26. Dancing like nobody’s watching
27. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring
28. More specifically than drumming: Reaching that place in a jazz session where the rhythm section is solid in the groove and the horns are saying something.
29. Making it through an existential crisis. Maybe the best feeling in the world. That life goes on even if the answers aren’t all there.
30. Sitting in a lawn chair on the beach by the lake on a sunny day. Maybe with a good book. Maybe with a journal. Maybe with someone else.
I don’t know much about my family history at all. I barely even know my grandparents’ stories. Anything earlier in history than that is way under the radar right now. I’d like to change that and learn where I come from.
