Thankfully recycling and composting are encouraged where I live, but I feel like I need to do more. I think I’ll focus on reducing food waste; by freezing more and canning fresh produce to preserve fruit and make pickled veggies for example.

Pro tip: Bring a towel. Wear “booty shorts” and a well-fitting, non-shifting sports bra. Bring lots of water (drink beforehand). Tie your hair back.
So I’ve equipped myself with a neat wifi pedometer device, the FitBit Ultra. It’s tiny, costs a bit of chunk of change, but I am getting really attached to wearing it everyday, everywhere. It gives me enough instant gratification, a bit of ego-stroking, that I’m falling for its tricks and I’m becoming more active in an effort to best myself.
I stumbled upon a blog that reviewed the FitBit Ultra, a cool geeky little gadget. It’s a digital pedometer on steroids. Sleep with this bad boy strapped to your wrist and it records your stillness and movements. Sync it to your fitbit.com account, you will see the number of times that you woke up or were sound asleep. This explains so much to me! It’s very cool and disconcerting to see how active I am when I should be deep in sleep. It doesn’t explain why you wake up, but it at least shows you just how restless of a sleeper you are (or are not).
I found a great group to lend my time to. They help bring young Black girls and teens into the geek fold. Awesome! More geek girls! Yay! http://blackgirlscode.com
Well it’s not quite what I had wanted but I will have to settle for renting a small corner in a large artists collective. It’ll be great to be around other artists; it’s very motivating to be around like-minded individuals.
I have returned to practicing Portuguese on a semi-regular basis. Brazilian podcasts and a language partner sure do help the cause too. Without that I would have very little motivation to do it considering everything else I’ve got going on.
I think I’m near to completing my aim to create an art studio. So far the kitchen has been transformed into a makeshift enameling station. I think I can push this further. Who needs a living room for watching tv when it can be the oil painting atelier?
Bummer deal that all of the summer art and craft shows are during my vacation times. Or I was just too late to register. Grrrr!!!
Four months into the year and as much time spent being creative, I’m still motivated to keep this going. I’ve mainly focused on my jewelry-making, but I hope to return to doing visual arts once more. Attending as many art shows always helps get me thinking about it and closer to doing it. Yay!
I was thinking of going the unconventional route and try my hand at polyphasic sleep patterns. But after mulling that over, it sounds like unnecessary torture.
So far, glass jewelry class is my fave endeavor right now. I love that it forces me to be less analytical. With the scrap glass that we’re provided in the course, I can be more abstract with my designs. I haven’t learned the kiln process, but I’m happy with the end-results from what I’ve been taught.
I haven’t quite figured out how to structure my apartment into a studio. Books and magazines showing various artist workspaces haven’t really help me. But I just found a class that teaches how to best do this. I can’t wait; even though it’s not until February.
I’m moving this up a notch to give me more motivation by taking jewelry metalsmithing classes. I’ve already done this in the past, but it’s been too long ago. I would love to add pieces of organically shaped metals to my beaded jewelry.
Apparently I’ve been quotable for a while. My younger brother has been repeating to innumerable folks something that I said when I was much younger and just newly cynical. I won’t repeat it in mixed company, needless to say this makes my goal accomplished.
