How I did it: Years of piano lessons, thanks to mom. I didn't really have a choice at the time but I recommend learning to play an instrument you like. Had some nightmarish teachers but some that were really patient and great. I had a habit of memorizing songs to avoid reading notes.... How I did it: Took it up in HS when the school I transferred to ended up not offering any Asian languages. Studied up to French 3 or 4 and regularly practiced speaking with my aunt and uncle who has a quebecois accent. Once I graduated HS, I didn't find much use for it since I had no French friends and I wasn't watching much French movies or TV.
