I’m a nutritionist who has been strictly vegetarian since 1969. It’s nutritionally not a problem if, like me, you want to avoid killing animals but have less scruples about exploiting (milking) them. Milk products provide enough nutrients so that getting a balanced diet is not a problem if you eat lots of fruits and vegetables, stick with whole grains and don’t eat too much sweets or fatty foods. But babies and little kids need milk. If you don’t want to give animal milk, breastfeeding them for a few years (in addition to other foods of course) is a good idea. Sadly (and foolishly) people do react to seeing toddlers breast feed, so keep explain to them it’s something you only do at home.
My two grown up sons are strong and health and have never eaten meat or fish. They were each breast fed for 3.5 years.
Vegans would be wise to take vitamin B12 supplements. Women vegetarians who are heavy menstrual bleeders need to watch their iron status.
