It is such a vexing, implacable, unforgiving adversarial thing, searching for gratifying summer employment. Each year I set out to prove the possible. Sometime around mid school year the idea of sheepherding was planted, took root and lived in my thoughts. It is now summer and I have arrived at my destination. I received my training and made friends with my horse and dogs. I’ve learned to use a rifle and build a tepee. The way I see it I’m merely substituting the grit and grim of art for life on the ranch. I am pulling out in two days for a three-month stint as a sheepherder. And it really is that simple.
