I’m gonna be naughty and brag. I spent a lot of time last year getting together an application for Oxford University – I guess it was more because my parents felt I should do it, and I wanted to prove myself. I managed to get it sent just in time, and they called me up for interviews. Went to the interviews, sat some exams, thought they’d never write back. January this year, I get a letter in the post…couldn’t believe my eyes. For this whole year, I’ve been trying to work really hard in my A-levels as if I were going to Oxford next year. But the harder I worked, the more I questioned whether it was worth it all – my stay in one of the colleges was a little isolating and socially awkward. Don’t get me wrong, the people are lovely, but I really couldn’t see myself so committed to my course for four years with such focused classmates; I would feel inferior. So I gave them a final “no” and am going to Sussex Uni instead.
I would caution anyone who is considering applying to Oxford next year to consider their goals and aims, and whether or not they thrive in such a work-oriented environment. However, if you feel that is you, I hope you go on to every success, and I’m sure you will love it.
Thank you for reading my story!
...but if you take into account that I did four full A-levels, it almost counts: AAAB.
