Spanish Reluctance

We have a Mexican nanny. We have hosted teachers from Spain in our home. One of my best friends is from México. Living in Texas I am constantly exposed to both European and Latin American Spanish.
It would be the foreign language I would be able to use the most and would have the most help in learning it. For some reason it is the foreign language I have the least interest in. Maybe because its so close and so readily available it just doesn’t seem exotic.
As I write this I wonder what I might be missing due to my reluctance.
