There is a well known saying that states: “The child becomes the parent and the parent becomes the child!” Oh how true this saying is… Think very carefully when you are interacting with your own parents, grandparents or inlaws and you will find that everything starts to slide into place as you realise how roles do really change as people become older. The next time you start to lose your temper with an older person, stop and take a few minutes to think about the time when that person helped you as a child. How that person had all the paitence in the world when helping you to achieve a goal. How quickly we do forget about all the time, effort and aboveall paitence that person placed into us. I am only human so I find myself needing to stop, take a breath and remind myself that as a child I was like this and more importantly, I will most likely end up in this situation eventually. I try and treat the elderly with the respect that they have earnt and the way I would like to be treated.

Practice is the perfect thing that is needed when learning any instrument. However, non directed practice can lead to procrastination and a huge waste of time! The one thing that I cannot stand is wasting time and going around in circles. What I have managed to do so far is to develop a proforma that keeps a record of an overview of my drum practice. I have just gone a step further by developing a proforma that gives an outline of the type of drum practice that I am carrying out daily. This enables me to ensure that I am covering the necessary and essential elements of drumming. It will show if there is anything that I a missing to which I can fix immediately.
This is a question that continues to zip round my mind. Why? Well, I suppose, obviously music was not considered as a number one priority when I was growing up… football was. Learning music theory as an adult is certainly harder than what it would have been as a child. But, it is not impossible as I have been proving to myself. What is needed is: 1. Lots of paitence 2. Oodles of determination 3. Keeping motivation firing 4. Not getting stressed and finally… 5. Definately not comparing yourself with the young adult next to you who has been studying and playing music since they were five! Hang in there, understanding will come!
