Now that I’ve done this, I can say that the best way to get ready for your first is fairly simple.
1. Ease into your mileage. If you are running already, add no more than 10% a week and don’t increase you pace (that’s just like adding miles).
2. You really only need to do a long run once a week. Do a long run on the day when you have the most time, and increase that run every week.
3. You can successfully complete a marathon with a 30 -40 mile a week average. If you can complete an 18 mile run a few weeks before the marathon, you’re ready.
4. Regardless of your fitness level, you have to get sleep. More is better, but if you are only getting 6 hours a day it will take longer to get ready.
