Learn Dvorak (read all 2 entries…)
Decided not to do this 6 months ago

I decided against pursuing this some time ago, but forgot to remove it. From what I’ve read it’s rare that a person can learn to touch-type in more than one layout. If you learn Dvorak, you’re likely to unlearn Qwerty, or have difficulty with it. I would still want to touch-type on other peoples’ computers and public computers, so I’m not going to bother. Also, the difficulty involved in changing some keyboards (laptops, the new Apple keyboards, etc.) to the Dvorak layout doesn’t seem worth it.

live without a television for a year
No TV for YEARS... 2 years ago

My family decided long ago to ditch the TV, and we’ve never looked back. As little free time as we have, I can’t imagine wasting it on that mind-numbing little box. The worst thing about TV is that it’s so hard to turn off. I don’t mind watching something on occasion if I’m somewhere where there is a TV (such as at the gym or in a hotel when I have extra time), but not having one is truly a form of freedom.

Oh, and I’m quite glad that I don’t have anything to add when people at work start gabbing about “reality” shows. Those things are such a sad statement on the “progress” of the human race.

Now, going a year without a computer…? Let’s try doing that for an hour first, okay?

Move to Chicago
Transplanted (by choice) from Minnesota 2 years ago

I wanted to place this on my list before my wife and I moved, but you never know when your boss is going to Google you. Now that I dumped that job and the move is complete, I just want to say that we’re loving it. We were definitely disoriented at first, but I guess that’s typical when you tear yourself up by the roots and “re-plant” elsewhere. It’s been 3 weeks now, though, and after the first two we were quite happy with our choice. For now we’re staying with friends in the NW suburbs, but plan to move closer to the city (and the train line) before long. As everyone says, there’s a ton to do here. Now to find a job!
