A few years ago, I used to spend some time in a latin bar in Edinburgh. It was in some sense a typical club, full of sleaze, loud music and copious alcohol, but what appealed to me was the way that every once in a while, a couple would take to the floor and dance a Salsa that put everyone else to shame. Their fluid, graceful movements and full control of their bodies were an inspiration to me.
I’ve been to a few Salsa lessons, but never followed through with the commitment. Next year, I hope to learn properly.

People are inspiring for many different reasons. The people who have inspired me are not necessarily those who have achieved great intellectual, entrepreneurial or sporting feats, but those who have communicated the driving force behind their life in a coherent and beautiful way. They know the value of everything and the price of nothing. They are people who, rather than working to appeal to the expectations of others, have a self-motivated determination to know their subject, to interact on a deeper level with others and to become the person they want to be without any concern for the temptations of money, fame or a glamorous lifestyle.
I’d love to be one of those people who has a mission in life, and to have a blind determination to fulfil it.
