I just took a job as a Building Services Engineer; I start on Monday. This is a total departure from the software work I’ve been doing, and the learning curve is going to be pretty steep, but I’m looking forward to it. I don’t know if this is The Job that is going to make me happy, but I guess there’s only one way to really find out…

The software thing has pretty good to me, no doubt. It’s allowed me to indulge my love of travel and introduced me to some of my closest friends, among quite a lot else. But unfortunately the job itself doesn’t really “shake my tree” anymore. I certainly don’t want to wake up at 40 still sitting in front of a computer punching in lines of code! So, the question is, do I go for a sideways move into something technology related? Do I leverage my engineering degree to explore another type of engineering job? Or do I turn my back on all that and do something leftfield like opening a coffee shop? Big Decision. I’m still figuring that one out.
I did a Spanish immersion course last year – two weeks in Granada and two weeks in San Sebastian. It was an /amazing/ experience! Not only did I learn some Spanish, I also met some amazing new friends and developed a love of the Spanish culture and lifestyle.
The trick will be to keep practising/learning now that I’m back in an English speaking country…
