I had my nose pierced in a dodgy back alley jewellers in central Varanasi during my first holiday in India.
It was done by a portly gentleman, who was marginally less than hygenic than my tastes…But I was in a holiday spirit, so I thought what the hell and decided to take the plunge!
The guy placed a long metal wire under a flame to pseudo-sterilise it and sharpened the tip of the wire. Then he gently brought the wire close to my face as if he was judging where to insert it, and WHAM the wire was through my nostril!
I suffered marginal pain afterwards and my eye watered slightly but it wasn’t exactly childbirth.
Now I can wear gorgeous nose studs and rings….it looks uber cool!
