Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Pride and Prejudice, done!
I’m re-reading Ender’s Game right now, but then I’ll either start the I Ching (as per another of my “things” on the list) or I’ll start one of these books.

Be abundant and free of debt. (read all 2 entries…)
Untitled

Well, I got sued by a credit card company. No worries. Sorting it all out. Got a lawyer, etc. Just waiting to see what happens. As for the rest of my debt, I plan to pay it off once my new paychecks begin to come in (I’m in that awkward spot where I started in the middle of a pay period and the company pays 1 week out/later). It’s frustrating. BUT it will all get better soon!

move to Japan (read all 3 entries…)
Untitled

So, a lot has changed since my last entry here. I work for a company with a large Japanese office in the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower!! The possibility of moving there is becoming more and more real. I’m studying for my first JLPT test, working hard at my new job, and letting the universe guide me. :) We’ll at least go there for our honeymoon when we can get married to see how we like it. ;D

We’re so much closer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We’ll see in June. XD

Take the Intro to Astronomy class on Coursera (audit it).
Untitled

I took it here: www.coursera.org

They offer LOTS of free courses from famous universities.

Get a promotion
Untitled

I got promoted to a full time Curriculum Developer at my previous job (I just never updated this, eh…) How did I do it? Worked my ass off! XD And kept myself thinking positively about the future and the things I was learning in my previous position. In fact, I did this twice over AND got a new job with a new, more famous and amazing company. I’ve been promoted again AND I think I’ll be managing others pretty soon. Amazing.

plant a butterfly garden
Untitled

I have a small plot of flowerbed in front of my apartment in Berkeley. Hopefully I’ll plant a lot of flowers next weekend (it rained this weekend) and get something growing!

become famous (read all 2 entries…)
Untitled

Well, I’m one step closer. I now work for one of the most famous companies in the world! XD

take time out for myself
Untitled

The most important thing is to do it. If there is something in your life making you unhappy, you are ALLOWING IT to make you unhappy. Take time for yourself, think clearly about what and why you are feeling this way, and then decide to change it.

The most important thing is to realize that doing things to please other people will only leave you with regrets and feeling worse, not better. For once, think about yourself. It’s not selfish; it’s healthy.

Gay marriage...

...why is it okay to vote on other people’s civil rights? It’s not.

move to Japan (read all 3 entries…)
Untitled

I’m not sure if I want to do this anymore. I want to go there, and I’d love to stay for a bit. Perhaps as an English teacher? But only if my wife can go with me. And it’s hard for couples to get jobs like that together. It would also be a pay cut (though when I came back to the US I would know both English and Japanese and would be more marketable having designed lessons, etc. which is part of my current job).

Translate a doujinshi.
Untitled

I’ve started working for 2 scanlation teams!! And I’ve been scanning my own, too. I haven’t started real translations yet, but I can read the Hiragana and Katakana. That’s good! I just need to find a program like Tejina (which I can’t get to work on my 64-bit Win 7). It’s a great program where you can draw the kanji and it will identify it and give you the character as type on screen. I miss it!

I work for a famous company, does that count?? :D It’s a start, anyway!

Katakana and Hiragana Conquered!

I’ve mastered katakana and hiragana, so I’m starting to work on non-kanji vocabulary! At the same time, I’m on lesson 4 of the Pimsleur approach and I love it!!! It really does work, and fast!

I’m starting the Pimsleur approach!

Improve my posture
Untitled

As soon as I get my own assigned desk, I’ll be getting one of those things for my chair that pushes your back and forces good posture. I’ll also work on my self-image so that I’m not so ashamed of my chest (which the girls when I was younger made fun of) so that I can stand up straight. :D

write a book
NaNoWriMo?

I’m thinking about taking part in NaNoWriMo this year, but I’m afraid it will distract me from other things I want to do. I’m not sure yet. I guess I’ll decide after con.

see the northern lights
Untitled

Apparently, they can be seen from northern Japan, too, so when we move, I’ll accomplish this goal, as well! Awesome!

read the i ching
Untitled

I have the book. I just need to finish the one I’m already reading!

move to Japan (read all 3 entries…)
Untitled

I’d like to move there to live. My company has a Tokyo branch, so maybe I can transfer to their office and work in localization! That’s my dream. Then, my fiancee can come with me and teach (because my company supports gay marriage, and by then, we’ll be married). And my kids can visit us in Japan every summer (they will LOVE that). It really is the perfect outcome. I can’t wait! The future is so exciting!!
