I’m an amateur magician – and the first time I went to Las Vegas the only thing I really wanted to do was go and see Siegfried and Roy’s show at The Mirage. The show was “dark” (which means no shows being performed) the entire time we were there.
So we opted to tour their Secret Garden. This is a paradise tucked away from everything right in the middle of the strip and if you didn’t know it was there as an attraction you wouldn’t believe something so beautiful existed. It’s the area where all the white tigers and other animals in the show are kept.
I was walking through looking at the animals and see someone out of the corner of my eye come out of a private access door. I looked – and looked again – and realized it was Siegfried. Even though I wanted to speak to him – I didn’t want to bother him. My Mom approached him and said, “My son is a magician. We really wanted to see you while out here – but the show was dark.”
Siegfried come over and spoke to me for a while about magic and then asked us what we’d seen so far in the garden. We told him we’d just got there. Without skipping a beat – he took us both by the hand and gave us a personal tour of the garden.
I never did get to see the show live – and/or meet Roy. But I did see the show on IMAX. But 100 shows wouldn’t equal the magic and kindness of that private tour! It was great!
When Roy was attacked – magic lost a great show!
