Like all my other hobbies, this one is no different in that it definitely is going to require time & some cash. Danny & I have been climbing about once a week since the end of December, ‘05, and so far, I’ve only averaged the once-a-week trip to Mission Cliffs on Harrison & 19th. I need to start going more (at least twice a week) if I hope to get better. Thanks to their January ‘06 special, I was able to forego the $120 initiation fee and pay only $59 for a month’s unlimited membership. Last Sunday I dropped some serious cash on the equipment—full gear: shoes, harness, belay device, caribiner, and a chalk bag.
Now I’ve just got to put my body where my mouth (and equipment) is… ;)
...as cliche’d as that may sound… but I definitely feel that your choice in the school you train with, and your Mestre, is crucial. Definitely try out a few classes at different academies, if at all possible.
In San Francisco alone, you have a pick of at least 5 different capoeira schools. Capoeira can be a way of life—it’s a wholistic, beautiful artform that involves dace, acrobatics, music, philosophy, and culture. You learn the moves, then how to play the game with your partner; to sing and give energy and play instruments in the roda. Most especially, I hope you find a community within which to grow.
