Steung Meanchey is a landfill just on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is filled with a few thousand hands of men, women, and children of every age sifting through unimagineably disgusting mountains of garbage – they are not beggars, in fact, they are recycling plastic, metal, and whatever else can be found of value in a landfill. For the last two years, I have visited this place and taken various items including the following: rice, band aids, toothbrushes & toothpaste, ointment, and sandals. It was heartwrenching the first time, but in the two subsequent visits I was able to control my emotions and take photographs to share with those who ‘care’ about such things & wish to make a difference – how ever small.
