Raise chickens
Meet Chucky and Chocky!

My two hens are just about sixteen months old now. Chucky is a Rhode Island Red, and Chocky is a Black Australorp. I raised them from chicks with zero prior experience. I spent a lot of time on backyardchickens.com researching every little odd behavior (for example, Chucky started to lay eggs when she was six months old, but Chocky didn’t start until she was eight months old). Their eggs are delicious – so fresh and with the most amazing strong golden yolks you can imagine. And their personalities are so distinct: Chucky is more maternal and doesn’t like to be touched, but likes to stand on my lap; Chocky is bossier and loves to be petted on her back and under her wattles. Most days, they free range happily in our half-acre yard, unless we won’t be home by dark to lock them in the coop away from the nocturnal predators like raccoons. I’m not sure I’d do this again, but I’m very pleased to have the girls. They certainly add a rural flavor to our lives!
