My local community college has a free tutoring lounge where tutors come to volunteer. Wouldn’t you know that one really nice Japanese tutor was volunteering but no one was asking for her help. So, even though I am not in classes, I was able to slip under the radar, share my services as a math/science tutor, and then schedule some free one on one meetings with her, and she’s great! It’s like having a free private tutor.
I have a feeling that I will be oweing a lot of thanks in the long run to my new sensei.
I went to my old community college to try volunteer tutoring because it was at least something that I knew was a valuable skill that I had, but I just wasn’t sure if it was ever going to pay. So, I got there, signed up to volunteer, and wouldn’t you know from day one I got a gig with one student who’s willing to meet up with me to be tutored in beginning algebra for $15/hr.
So far, that gig seems to offer me 3 hours of work per week. Then, I went and looked around another math tutoring program on campus and it looks like I have a good shot at being hired to work as a tutor there for $12/hr being hired by the math department. Things are looking up for me. =)
