How does one promote a new website with no budget?

I need a plan of action.

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada so seeing the Northern Lights is nothing new to me.

For those not lucky enough to see it in its glory, it really is worth it.

One of my main goals of the last few years has been to start my own business. I’ve had many fleeting ideas but struggled to come up with a really good one.

One day I decided to bite the bullet and wait no longer. I decided to just try something. Just try to get my feet wet. Just get the process going. Statistically, the first attempt at starting a business almost always fails anyway.

When I was introduced to Ruby on Rails over a year ago by a colleague, I decided to create a simple bookmark application as a way of learning this framework.

One year later, my site is built and I’ve decided to create a company and launch the site for public use. It is free to use and financed by advertising.

I don’t expect it will be very profitable but at least I got the business started. Maybe that one step will lead to other ideas, other opportunities, and ultimately success.

But in the mean time, I can take pride that I actually now have a business registered in my name (I haven’t quit the day job yet).

It feels like a child, my own creation, and I’m quite proud of myself.

Now the real work begins. How to promote and get others to use.
