Lose 30 pounds
20 minutes a week 2 years ago

I lost 30 lbs through lifting weights for 20 minutes a week using a methodology called “SuperSlow”. It reduces the risk of damage and is the most efficient means of building lean muscle mass that I have ever experienced personally. YMMV, but it is worth looking into.

I have 10 more pounds to go and they will probably take an actual change in the way I eat. I don’t have much discipline so this phase will be harder.

ZenHacks & Friends @ RubyConf 2005 == Unmitigated Success 2 years ago

Fret Fret Fret… all over with and damn successful.

I got multiple applause throughout the talk for the things I showed and probably just as much how I showed them, as I had pre-recorded movies that were really smooth, to the point, and relatively error free.

I’ve since been showered with compliments and questions about my talk and am feeling more than a bit overwhelmed, awed, and grateful.

I decided that breadth first is the way to go. I’ll lose the newbs all at once and they can enjoy their slumber. Those that can stick it out will be able to do so for as long as they want.

I’ve gotten my first rough draft done, and a finalized schedule. I have 2 more draft milestones + 5 weeks of coding to do.

Yay for Writing! 3 years ago

I wrote up an outline of my presentation for rubyconf2005, both in depth first and breadth first order. The audience is a bit of an unknown this year (no thanks to rails), so I’m not sure which type of talk would work best. This way, I’ll have both sets made and I can even let the audience choose!

I’m now making slides for them!

Get a job where I can code in Ruby all day
Untitled 3 years ago

OK. So I’m not coding in ruby all day. Some of the day I’m coding in java…. whatever. But I DO get to code in ruby, and I’m working FOR a rubyist, so it all works out quite well.

I pointed out an odd point on one of Eric Hodel’s message length histograms. Turns out they were all spam posts. WOOT!

As drbrain mentioned below, both of our talks were accepted for rubyconf 2005. Now… to get writing.

lose my virginity
Untitled 3 years ago

TOTALLY worth it! And better to lose it to someone who knows what they are doing and can help you feel comfortable and actually enjoy yourself rather than the awkward, painful, confusing, fumblings that usually occur.

Totally worth it. The benefits gained TOTALLY outweigh the cost of getting the ban passed.

I might be using http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0387954759/ to do this. I’ll learn more when I look at it at UW bookstore tomorrow. It WAS recommended by a fellow hacker.

GTD - email progress 3 years ago

YAY! I’m up to 2005! OSX’s mail.app has a rather good offline mode. I was able to create 3 action folders and go through about 100 email on the bus. By the time I got to vivace coffee to hang w/ mrdorbin I had 14 mail to fire off and had filed 100+ email into their proper homes (or deleted them—which is the most proper home of all imo). I’ve got 13 left for january, 37 from february I’m behind on, and 10 new ones waiting for me from yesterday/today.

... catching up!

The hardest thing for me doing GTD 3 years ago

I have far too many “collection buckets” and I’m pushing hard to collect and reduce them. So far I’ve done my condo and started in on my work and person email accounts.

I still have 20 from 2003, 59 from 2004, and 54 for 2005 in my personal account to go. I’m working on becoming a filer, not piler but honestly, that is a rather long standing habit to change. It’ll take a while.
