I realized I wasn’t making much headway on my goal of learning Greek. Although I studied ancient Greek many years ago, modern Greek still doesn’t come easy and I’d been putting off the real work of acquiring the language because the job seemed too big. Now I’m focusing on completing the first level of Pimsleur’s Greek course. I’ll do the first five units in the coming week and check back in then.

How I did it: My training included short rides most mornings through the summer, with a long ride every weekend, getting a little longer every other week. Last fall I rode a flat century in six hours. I crashed in a paceline twenty miles in and, I found out later, tore the meniscus in my knee. Continuing to ride eighty miles after that probably wasn’t the brightest idea, but I’m glad I did it. After surgery this spring the knee is starting to work agai… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I use Pandora's iphone app and have a dock plugged into a stereo in the kitchen, so I can listen while I cook. Wonderful. Read how I did it…
How it always goes: you get busy and think you don’t have time to do things like kick back and listen to your favorite record. But when you take the time to do what you love, everything else works better and you get more done.
Last fall I rode a flat century in six hours. I crashed in a paceline twenty miles in and, I found out later, tore the meniscus in my knee. Continuing to ride eighty miles after that probably wasn’t the brightest idea, but I’m glad I did it. After surgery this spring the knee is starting to work again but I’m way out of shape. I’d like to build strength over the winter and hit the road in good condition next spring, train hard over the summer, and return to the same century in the fall of ‘09. With better conditioning, and better choices about whose wheel to get on, I hope I can improve my time.
