last night, my friend and i spontaneously decided to start a band. all three of us jammed on guitars and later brought in a crappy keyboard, but once we choose a song to really practice on (we plan on performing at our halloween party), i’ll be on bass, angela will be keyboard, and gordon will be on guitar. we just started teaching gordon the guitar last night, but we’re confident that he’ll be rocking out in no time! oh, and we’ve called ourselves, “fate’s fetus,” a play on destiny’s child, haha.

How I did it: my body knew how to swim, but my mind didn't. i was always too afraid. i would sprint across the pool because i felt uncomfortable underwater and feared that i would drown. with help from my swimming instructor-friend, she helped me calm my mind and relax my body. when i'm more relaxed, i swim slower, and therefore won't burn out as quickly. i'm still practicing, and learned that i'm training myself mentally rather than physically. Read how I did it…
my friend and i attempted to do this but could not find any thrift stores there! will try again next time, and we’ll scout out our locations first. :P
my friend is a certified life guard and teaches at the local pool. i’ve decided to make this goal into a reality so we’ve been scheduling to meet weekly. so far we’ve only gone twice, but i have improved dramatically. i’ve always known how to swim; my body knows how, but my mind is still afraid. i’m learning to calm myself down and just take it slow. the reason why i can’t make it across is because i’m so scared that i just sprint across. to me, swimming slowly = more time in the water = more likely to drown, even though i’m swimming in the 3 ft. section of the pool!
johanna’s been teaching me the backstroke. this is the scariest one for me, because i’m floating on my back (i was really scared to float; i feel like i have less control), and i had a hard time propelling myself with my arms. plus, i kept swallowing water. this, i know, takes practice. everything does.
my biggest accomplishment of the day was not only swimming across the pool without stopping halfway, but also floating on my back while slowly swimming in the water! to me, that’s the epitome of not being afraid, because that position shows that you are really relaxed and comfortable. i can’t believe i did it and am excited to go back next week to “confirm” that i can do it again.
i wasn’t going to check off this goal because i felt i needed to “confirm” it as well, but to hell with it, i did it! that counts for something. :)
