Lose 20 pounds
A question about this goal: I haven't eaten meat in years and I don't take any powders or pills for more protein, if I start eating little servings of meat again will I gain more weight or lose? January 5th, 2007 14:11

Answers:

It depends on how lean the meats are and what your normal diet is. If you’re just adding lean meats to an already healthy diet, you shouldn’t notice any weight gain at all. But if you used to eat mostly veggies and salads, and you add high fat meats like ground beef, then you might start gaining. Just stick with things like skinless chicken breast and fish and you should be fine.

You may have some problems digesting the meat at first. I have a vegitarian friend who keeps trying to go back to meat, and every time she tries, it does a number on her stomach.

I’m so afraid of it doing a number on my stomach as well… I finally got myself eating eggs and foods made with eggs. I still have yet to drink milk though…

I haven’t touched meat in 15 years…

I eat mostly raw foods… lots of fresh veggies and fruits, but I’m not as healthy as I thought I was. My doctor’s the one who really wants me to add meat to my diet.

Thanks for your help!

I keep hearing it and I can’t warn you enough, be careful getting back on the meat. I’ve been back a long time, but about 10 years ago I was vegetarian for 2 years. I had to get back to meat BITE-BY-BITE. One bite today, two the next, then three and got sick. Went back to two the next day. It didn’t make sense to me because I have a very strong stomach and I wasn’t a vegetarian for moral reasons (hence it wasn’t psychological). I have no idea how it pertains to your weight loss as it wasn’t applicable to mine, but again, I stress CAUTION. Good luck.

Thanks… I think I’m going to see a nutritionist and see if they think I’m missing something from my diet and if I am I want them to help me put that back in without using pills and meat. If they tell me I should add chicken I think I might add a few oz. of chicken a month.

Thanks for the warning… if I do go back, one bite at a time!

I have heard that going back onto meat can be rough, and it is best to do is slowly. I eat it because I like it and I find it to be more filling. I feel more balanced when I eat it. But, that is just what I have experienced. Good luck!! But, I don’t think that eating especially lean meats would cause you to gain weight. Chicken, boneless and skinless is my favorite. Turkey as well. You can just cook some up and toss it into a salad and there you go! Again, good luck!

Thank you for your advice!

“My doctor told me I need to start trying. I haven’t had any meat, (not even fish or chicken), for going on 15 years. I refuse to take Vitamin pills and what not and it’s starting to take a toll on my body he said…

Someone told me protein bulks you up, but sometimes helps you lose… so I was confused!”

You don’t HAVE to eat meat to get adequate protein. I’m a vegan, and according to Nutridiary yesterday my protein intake came to 133%- that’s more than you need! I did that without taking any kind of supplements, and without meat, dairy or eggs. I also don’t monitor my intake at all, either. To me it seems pretty hard to not get enough protein even if you are a vegetarian/vegan.

Why did you even become a vegetarian? For ethical reasons? If so, I urge you to try alternative sources for your protein. Actually, how do you even know you’re low on protein? Did you get a blood test? Just so you know I was anemic (severely protein deficient) WHEN I ATE MEAT, so eating meat isn’t a magic bullet cure for protein deficiency anyway. If you assume it’s a protein deficiency just because you’re tired or whatever, you could be missing the source of your problem completely. If you really do care about your health get a blood test before eating meat again.

I did have blood work done. I’ve been taking some homeopathic supplements and I’m all better now.

I stopped eating meat because I watched a boy in my class pull a blue grocery bag out from the center of his hot dog one day.

I’ve refused meat since then. I tried some months ago, but its tasted funny, made me sick, and I gag thinking about that day when the boy pulled the bag out of his mouth!
