A question about this goal: Is it preferential to place towns into counties (i.e. Ohio > Franklin County > Columbus) or not (i.e. Ohio > Columbus) ? April 4th, 2007 20:16

Actually, this has been debated before…

I can’t find the post in Data Janitors, but the general consensus was that putting cites into counties was problematic for a couple of reasons.

1) It makes it harder to find a city if you aren’t a local. (I’m from Houston, and I couldn’t tell you what county Chicago is in with a gun to my head.)

2) Some cities (Austin, Texas, for example) are in more than one county.

If you browse the site, you’ll see that there are in fact several cities placed like this, but I’d recommend against following this example. I think it tends to confuse things more than organize.

Here’s the Data Janitors post. :]

It suggests adding county names as a tag, which I think is a really great alternative.
