Good question. Google and other search engines regularly index the site and there’s no way on 43T to prevent that. It’s a very public site in that sense. There’s some good reading on this topic in the Community Guidelines under “go public with your dreams”. One way that people get around the public vs. anonymous issue is to use a generic username and a display name that isn’t related to your offline identity. Lots of folks go that route so they can be open on the site without broadcasting their offline identity too much. The FAQ explains how you can change your display name

hi,
I just read your entry and maybe you can help me? I’ve got a username with absolutely no connection to my offline life, so I thought I could be relatively free in posting entries here.
Now I just found out, that 43things somehow shared my email adress (?) and that all my entries can be found if someone searches me on www.spokeo.com (a people search engine where you can “google” yourself).
Isn’t that strange? Do you maybe have an idea what to do to stop this? no other people search website has found me before. I don’t want to have to delete my 43things account because of this :(
thanx for your help!
Hi,
43T doesn’t share email addresses. The website you’re referencing allowed you to enter your own email address to perform an API-generated search of your content across many sites (flickr, myspace, facebook, linkedin, 43things, etc.).
We have an email preference under the edit-your-account section that allows you to opt out. Try this:
1) go edit your account (make sure you’re signed in first)
2) click on “share more information”
3) un-check the last box on the page which says “Allow other websites to find my content using my email address”
4) click the “save changes” button
That should do the trick.
