Does drinking run in your family? That would make it easier for you to be a binge drinker.

Is there a lot of stress in your life and are you using alcohol to deal with it? Sometimes the easiest path is, you know, the easiest path.

Do you have a social group that is held together by binge-drinking-type behavior? Maybe you’re afraid of moving on to a different, possibly more unpredictable, social scene.

There could be many reasons. Addictive behavior (when you want to stop but can’t) is a complicated phenomenon. But as they say, admitting you need help is the first step.

Who do you know whom you think might be able & willing to help you? Do you know somewhere you can go for therapy to try and examine and change the deeper emotional, etc. roots of your current behavior patterns? Have you talked to any friends about this?

Good luck & hang in there & remember who you really are…you might think you don’t know who that is, but you do!

yeah i spose my Mum has always liked a drink and gets drunk pretty easily, my life is maybe a bit stressfull at times, but isn’t everyones?? the thing is, i think i’d be able to recognise that i had a problem with alcohol if i truly went out with the intention to get shitfaced, but i really really dont! it’s like some weird force takes over and as soon as i get tipsy, i just carry on and on, and i haven’t a clue why. i hate myself when i’m drunk, i get abusive and very emotional, and it’s not fun anymore, but i just cant seem to find a middle ground. either i stay totally sober (and have a rubbish night cos all my friends are drinking and i get bored) or get wasted.

my social group is very mixed, and none of my friends seem to have this problem at all, it’s like a running joke amongst them now, like who’s India going to end up going home with tonight, and yeah i laugh along but really its not funny!!

maybe i’ll visit some alcohol dependency sites and see if i fit the description of alcoholic waster. god i hope not!!

thanks for the support xxx

Sure, no problem, anytime! I’d like to know how you’re getting on.

Just from your posts, you have at least 2 strengths going for you: you do have the ability to go out and not drink (even though it’s boring) and you are concerned about it and taking steps to do something about how much you drink when you do drink. I think it’s probably very important to notice that if you can go out and not drink, but you just don’t enjoy it, you’re probably not a total alcoholic waster ;b .

You probably don’t need me to say this, but: are you being careful and protecting yourself from STD’s when you go home with the Flavor of the Night? Your friends shouldn’t be laughing about that possibility, you could really end up screwing yourself big time (uh, terrible pun not intended). At the risk of sounding like a public service announcement, Don’t Forget the Condoms!
