A question about this goal: How much money would I need to save to go travelling for a year? what are the best ways to make money other than a 9-5 standard job? November 7th, 2007 02:29

Answers:

Count about 30 euros per day (Airlines tickets apart, not incluyded in this amount). If you travel long time in India, then 15 euros will be enough per day, but in Eurpe count about 40 euro if you sleep in Youth Hostels (better travel in night boats in Greece, or buses to save night of hotel). In South America the average is 20 euro per day in hostel plus food plus some excursions, local buses, beers, ice creams, etc. Cheaper in Brasil and Bolivia, but Chile is more expensive.
So, 30 euro per 365 days, about 10.000 euro, plus RTW ticket.
But it is worth! What you will learn in your round the owrld journey is priceless (If you can, have a look at my web page www.jorgesanchez.org under the chapter El Camino de Santiago, where I write about the round the world journey and give 6 possibilities.
Good luck!

yeah well i been travelling the world for 3.5 yrs now… all over europe and asia … and if you just go anywhere on the map … if u like it .. stay for a few weeks or months if u like .. walk in …ask for a job in a resteraunt …earn some coin …work a little of the night …eat for free.. drink for free… .and have the time of your life … get bored … then move on to your next place!!!! anywhere on the meditteranian … u will find your own room in an apartment for around 50€ a week!!

Id love to do something like that yanno!

Did you buy a ticket round the world or how did you travel?

What countries have you visited in doing this?

About £1000 stirling per month if you want to live comfortably and not have to work at all for the whole year. Some countries you need less, others you might need more, so it balances out..

AS far as making money goes other than 9-5
Either join a band, sell drugs or sell your body.

Hope this helps

I’ll pass on the sell drugs and body thing but thanks for the rest of info

other than selling drugs … u could just work in a resteraunt at night … its no 9-5 !!! 1000 pounds a month .. you must of been staying in the hilton !!

Hi! I traveled the world for a year. I was an English Teacher in Asia where you can make a lot of money, way above the normal standard of living if you work really hard. Also, you get to interact with the actual locals as a teacher. If your students are adults, they will definitely take you out and show you around their country- at their expense of course. If you have young students, expect to get a gift for every occasion. Every two months, I would take a two week vacation. I went everywhere! China, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal, Tibet, Australia, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore. In Asia, if you really plan, budget, and haggle you can get by with 300 dollars a week or even less. It’s good to work and have an actual place to come home too cause traveling gets very tiring after awhile if you keep on moving. You appreciate it more when you have little breaks in between.

George Sanchez is about right on the costs, but be realistic about this. If you like to drink it can get much more expensive! Stay away from Europe and you will save alot of money. Teaching English is a good way to make money as you travel in Asia. Japan, Korea, China, all have high demand for english teachers. The best way to save money is to not spend it. Set a goal and make it happen.

Hi,

You need to be selective in the sense you choose to travel to low-cost countries. If so, you should be able to have a budget of 20-40 Euro per day assuming you sleep in shared rooms in hostels and make much of your food yourself in some countries.

Local transportation is relatively cheep in South America and Asia. Don´t forget to budget for buying water and using internet cafées.

If you want to visit Galapaos, machu Picchu, make safaris in Africa, scuba dive etc etc you will of course need another budget number so basically you can say that your “memories” will be the most difficult part to make a budget for.

If you need more information you can have a look at our website http://www.sundstromtravel.se

TajLV a beautiful day, life is good

When I was a student, some of the ways I made money while traveling in Europe were:

1. Sold my blue jeans and an NFL jersey in Istanbul.

2. Gave blood in Athens.

3. Scalped concert tickets in Mannheim.

4. Typed up youth hostel rules in Crete (they paid me with three nights free stay).

5. Not me, but one friend had a Polaroid camera and took/sold photos with it.

In Asia, teaching English is a great option if you can manage the visa requirements. In fact, teaching anything is always a possibility. And if you are bilingual, you can do some interpreting or be a guide if you know a place well enough. Have a great trip!
