well, duh!
ok, so… thanks for your reply :)
you would probably understand my frustration better after reading my entries under “find out how cheers work…” goal (it’s marked as done on my list). plus – this link doesn’t explain why cheers disappear!!!
This is totally insane, I know, but it bugs me horribly. My cheers are gone before I give them out and there is no explanation… ;)
thanks again,
love&peace :)

I have been on 43 Things for about 3 1/2 years now and while the site has made changes I have learned, mostly through trial and error, how many things work.
Unfortunately I don’t know why cheers disappear. I do know that they do, and while I have a few hunches, I don’t know the reason nor the algorithm behind it.
You may know that each person gets about 5 cheers each day, but that isn’t the whole story, there are other factors involved. I have discovered that when I log on and I see I have cheers if I don’t use them all during that session, them they can and often do disappear after that. I also know that the number of cheers each person receives, is influenced by how many cheers they receive from others. What’s more, who cheers you is a factor. When new people cheer you, who have never cheered any of your goals before, that puts more weight on how many cheers you get in that day. When you receive cheers from others who have cheered you in the past, that can still influence your getting cheers but not nearly as much. If someone who has given you many cheers who then gives 1 more new cheer, it will have very little weight, often genearting 0 or only 1 cheer for your next day’s allotment of cheers.
There isn’t a direct correlation or formula, as far as I can see. If a new person gives you 1 or 2 or 3 cheers, that doesn’t necessarily equate to you receiving that many. But sometimes it does and sometimes it generates many more cheers for you than that new person has given you.
The algorithm appears to be complex and seemingly random at times, though I believe it has a method.
As I said you get about 5 cheers each day, but the number varies. Now after 3 1/2 years on, I go many days with 0 new cheers. Then I can get 5 or more and sometimes less. The most I have ever received in one day is 18, the least is 0.
So you could write to the admin people and ask them why cheers disappear. I suspect they won’t tell you, though you could ask. Its also possible they don’t know. Perhaps the cheers generator is, after all, a random number generator. I don’t know, though all my experience tells me it isn’t quite that random.
I know this doesn’t answer your question, but I hope it helps a little.

Hi,
thank you for your response; indeed
it helped me understand it better, although – again – nobody seems to know why do they disappear ;)
To me, finding out how it works became an unhealthy obsession after I picked up an insanity dictated goal about cheers posted by other 43thinger… now we both can’t find rest… lol, and lol once again :)))))
I thank you once more for producing an amazingly elaborate answer to my silly issue, I too thought to seek an answer through the admin, but then thought it would be going too far. Into the insanity that is ;)
Sending a bunch of good vibes,
love&peace

did you ever find the answer you were looking for?

Errr…sort of.
Nope, not really. But I haven’t been on here as much as I used to either, so maybe something has changed.
