Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

Sleep time?

Please tell me there is a better answer than this!

Body temperature drops one degree Farenhiet during sleep… those whose body temperature drops most rapidly have the shortest sleep latency, i.e., they fall asleep more rapidly… sleeping in a cooler room might make one sleep more efficiently. More efficient sleeping -> getting up early enough to get in some exercise before the morning shower.

Have any scientific studies been done to verify the validity of this theory?

I’m not sure what part you are calling “theory,” but here goes: there are data showing rapid 1F hypothermia correlates with short sleep latency (PubMed search hit 124 journal articles for sleep + latency + body + temperature); however, there is no strong proof that good sleepers can get by with less sleep…. but it is a reasonable hypothesis (methinks!).

I suggest the time for exercise should come from giving up some TV watching.

Great idea! I went TV-free 15 months ago, and not for a minute have I missed the negative news and the blah-blah-blah that tries to vegetize me!

But then the time to exercise will have to come from something else…

Sleep is about the only place left… but, for me, sleep can be fitful, so when it’s going good, I like to let it run its course. Though I love to cook, maybe a couple nights off a week from dinner will be the solution for exercise time! The caloric benefits would also accrue!

In my quest for time-saving, many times I try to cook double (things like soups, marinara sauce or chili) and refrigerate or freeze the extra portion. I know it’s not the same as a fresh-made meal, but it will still save you time, because cooking the extra batch adds little cooking time (and you don’t have to clean every knife/skillet/etc twice) and you still get a homemade meal. Actually, there are a few dishes that improve with some time for blending flavors.

I’ve always been troubled by my inability to make plans for more than a couple of days in advance… double cooking sounds like a great way to find some time! I agree that additional flavors develop in the fridge, or my favs, in the cinnamon rolls or zucchini bread, as time goes by… but then I just eat more ;-( Thanks for the smart idea, and I will try to focus on healthy foods in proper amounts.

This has got to be one of the worst excuses man has ever made and I know I am a user of this one too but I heard this story the other day, a woman who didn’t exercise because she was too busy and didn’t have the time, but you know what she found the time and now she prioritises exercise into her daily routinue and is in amazing shape and she is busier now than she ever was and has more responsibility than most people you would know. You know that time is the only thing we all have in common – I mean we don’t have equal ability, talent, skills or experiences. It just shows that if you want to you will make the time, think of all those people who exercise daily and are extremely busy – don’t fall into the poor excuse of I don’t have the time. Mabey multi task – ie read something you have to read on the bike or crosstrainer, listen to on a run, plan your day mentally while you walk, socialize with a friend you need to catch up with on a hike or at the pools, spend quality time with your family on a bike ride. And if worst comes to worse get and hour less sleep – its probably worth it. But ultimately “I don’t have the time” is an excuse – a lie you tell yourself to get out of something – sorry to break the truth to ya. Good Luck

What an interesting thought: “Time is the only thing that we all have in common”! Time is really and truly only a concept. In fact, all we really have is right now, with apologies to The Flaming Lips. I have found that by making my exercise a compelling social occasion (I go to a college aerobics class—imagine the old geek among the thirty 20-yr-old girls not yet women). Just 3 classes done so far, but viva les classes!


maybe the time spent online? or time spent waiting for nothing? tv is probably a good idea. i know i personally could exercise more late at night when i’m up doing all of the above.

Chucking the boob tube is one of the best things I’ve done in the last couple of years… except when severe weather is in the area!
