macroidtoe added an entry about Learn a programming language.:

I always wanted to do this, but it seems like I was always discouraged from pursuing it. I was told that I’d find it “boring,” told that it was more important that they fit those honors courses into my schedule, and then in my last semester of college where I was finally going to take the introductory course just to say I’d done it… they canceled it.

So here I am, post-graduation, and I’m reading a programming textbook. I went with Python based on a number of recommendations, and I’m working my way through the exercises in the book.

I’ve already got a first project planned: a simple program which displays a random message taken from a file (which can be freely added to), a random background image (again, from a customizable list), and a random 16×16 sprite character (yet again from a customizable list). It’s intended to be added to your startup programs, sort of a “message of the day” or “fortune cookie” program. Not exactly a work of programming genius, but I think with that added graphical flair I can make it into a nice, polished, fun little app.

I’ve dabbled in Java and Python a little bit (meaning I can write “Hello World”, the easiest thing to possibly do). I would like to learn but I don’t know what I would do with it once I learned.

I think I’d like to make websites. Is that mostly in Java now? Or is it still pretty much rooted in HTML? Anyway, I think making a website(s) would be worthwhile.

A friend of mine that knows some programming has told me to learn Java, so I guess that is the one that I will learn!

Oops – I didn’t mean to add this to my ‘To Do’ list, just wanted to get on the other side of it to be registered as “Willing to Help”. I’ve been in the IT industry for nearly ten years now, and programming is my bread and butter.

Just learned the basics of PHP. Very easy to pick up if you have had any experience in other languages.

The Plan: C++

ThePhydeaux added an entry about learn a programming language:

I used to play around in BASIC with our Atari 800XL, but that was a little while ago… more recently I dabbled in javascript, but never did anything remotely significant with it. My company gave me an account to SkillPort, which has lots of IT courses, so I figure I’ll do a couple C++ courses.

Choose the right one though

mb1471 added an entry about learn a programming language:

I learned html, then java, then c. I never use the first two, so don’t waste your time with them. c can make anything possible, aside from internet applets, but that’s a rare usage of java, and the only reason why learning it was not a TOTAL waste.

a nice introduction

Python or SQL?

twilight2000 added an entry about Learn a programming language:

Still working out whether it’s gonna be Python, Ruby or SQL to start with <del>- I’m likely to end up working with Web and Games -</del> hence the Python and SQL attraction (and I’m hearing good things about Ruby…)

It’s been 20-some years since I knew Basic (yea, yea, insert dinosaur jokes here ;p), so I have a broad understanding, but want to be able to create on the fly.
