How I did it: I took a long, hard and honest look at the relationship. After nearly four years, in a matter of months we'd gone from what I had thought was really happy to completely over. Then I realised that I hadn't really been all that happy. The relationship had been very one-sided in many ways. I also took a hard look at the part I played and what I could have done better. How I did it: I started smoking on and off at 12, gradually increasing until I finished school and began smoking a packet a day at around age 17. This continued until I was 29, when I finally managed to quit after several attempts at going cold turkey and using NRT (usually patches). I managed to quit for five years, despite having the occasional cigarette but finally succumbed again after a trip to Europe (where everyone was still smoking). Once I started again, it's taken another 7 years to quit again. I have done periods of 3 months before but was still having the occasional smoke from time to time. This time I did it differently - in three phases. The first cut down the strength of nicotine in the cigarettes I was smoking. Then I stopped smoking tailor made cigarettes and started rolling my own with filters. The smell of tailor made cigarettes became revolting, despite the fact I was still smoking. Once the smell went off, the taste did too. So then I was just smoking rollies. Again it took me several attempts at going through the physical withdrawal only to land back with another nicotine addiction. I was starting to get really annoyed with myself. The last time, I put a patch on and once I got through withdrawal, I found I now hated the taste of rollies too. You can always get through that and start to enjoy it again, but I chose not to this time. There's no real magic trick to it. When you're sick enough of it, it does make it easier.
